Why are ratings important?
Rating agencies such as A.M. Best Company, Fitch, Standard & Poor's and Moody's keep consumers and investors informed about an insurance company's
relative strength and claims-paying ability. Ratings provide a "snapshot" of a company's financial condition over a specific period of time. When developing ratings, these independent agencies
look at several important areas affecting an insurance company's strength and stability. These include:
1.) Profitability
2.) Adequacy of capital
3.) Liquidity
4.) Investment risk
5.) Management
Ratings for a particular company may vary from one rating agency to another, depending on the weight each rating agency assigns to the measurement factors.
